Taking A Leap of Faith

By Christine Kern

Life doesn’t always give us clear directions or make the path easy for us to follow. Sometimes, what we know in our hearts to be the right move can be difficult to maneuver because of the clutter of daily expectations and obligations.

And yet, in order to live our fullest lives, and develop our truest potentials, sometimes we have to take that big, bold leap of faith to strike out on a new, unbroken path in order to find our real purpose. As Joseph Campbell wrote, “Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.”

Leaps of faith are HARD because they depend on just that - FAITH that things happen as they are supposed to happen, and that our greater purpose ultimately will be served as a result. That doesn't mean that there won’t be a TON of fear in the letting go. But in the letting go, , we MAKE SPACE for the RIGHT things to happen.

We become trail blazers, actually cutting the path that takes us to our goals and our fulfillment. We can manifest what we need to succeed. Joseph Campbell tells us, “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.”

The alternative is to stay on the path chosen for us by others and to take the SAFE route, which might also mean sacrificing our mental or psychological or even physical health in the long run. Daily pressures like the need to pay bills can stand in the way of taking a leap of faith. So can bowing to other people’s expectations of what your path should be.

But banishing fear and its companions makes negativity wither, and allows us to move forward on new, unbroken paths that we can only imagine.

Life is only uncomfortable if you’re afraid of it.

The truth is that each one of us is magnificent and powerful and capable of great things, but our fears often keep us from knowing it. Fears hold us back from taking those necessary leaps of faith that drive us forward into beautiful possibilities. Henry David Thoreau asserted that, “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” In fact, this sense of fear and uncertainty is necessary in order for us to take those important leaps of faith and blaze our new paths. “We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal,” Thoreau asserts, “ and then leap in the dark to our success.”

Lissa Rankin wrote, “Fear carries with it a precious message, and if you’re willing to listen to your fear, rather than run away from it, fear can help you get on the fast track to healing in mind, body, and soul.” It can also help you follow your heart to find your true path.

As the Tao te-ching states, “Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe.”

Personally, I deal with my fear by holding on to the positive energy that is swirling around me and holding on the knowledge that things have ALWAYS, somehow in the end, managed to work out for the best.

Let go and let the universe catch you.
